#1 Guide to Tampa Bay Screens: Ranking the Best Mesh for Your Lanai

If you live anywhere between Tampa and Zephyrhills, you know that “standard” builder-grade screens simply don’t last. We live in a unique climate where 100-degree afternoons are the norm and mid-summer tropical storms bring winds that put massive pressure on your pool cage or patio. Your screens take a beating every single day.

Most homeowners just call and ask for “new mesh,” but there is a massive difference in what you’re actually getting for your money. If you’re paying for a rescreen, you want to make sure you aren’t just buying another two years of peace before the sun rots the material again.

Here is the breakdown of what is on the market right now, ranked from the best long-term investment to the most basic “quick fix.”

1. Super Screen® (The Gold Standard)

If you are tired of calling a repair guy every few years, Super Screen is the answer. This is the top-tier upgrade that we recommend most often for full pool cages in Tarpon Springs and Lutz.

Unlike standard fiberglass—ซึ่ง is essentially glass yarn coated in vinyl—Super Screen is made of high-tenacity vinyl-coated polyester.

  • Why it’s #1: It is basically “set it and forget it.” It handles the brutal Florida UV rays without becoming brittle or fading to that ugly silver color. It won’t tear when the wind picks up during hurricane season. In fact, it’s so strong it often comes with a 10-year warranty.

  • The Options: I usually tell people to go with the 17/14 mesh if they want the best airflow. However, if you live near the water or heavily wooded areas, the 17/20 is a great “tight weave” version that blocks even the smallest gnats.

2. Pet Screen / Tuff Screen (The Heavy-Duty Guard)

Do you have a 70-pound dog that jumps at squirrels? Or kids who treat the lanai like a soccer goal? If so, standard mesh doesn’t stand a chance. Pet Screen is the toughest mesh you can buy, period.

  • The Strength: This material is roughly 7 times stronger than standard fiberglass mesh. It is specifically engineered to be puncture and tear-resistant against claws, paws, and even the occasional stray ball.

  • The Trade-off: Because it is so thick, it’s a bit more visible. You won’t get that “invisible” look, but it’s a lifesaver for those bottom panels where the damage usually happens. We often do a “hybrid” install—Pet Screen on the bottom and Super Screen on the top.

3. No-See-Um Screen (The Bug Fortress)

If you’re near the Gulf in Dunedin or Clearwater, or near a lake in Land O’ Lakes, you know the “No-See-Ums” are no joke. These tiny biting gnats fly right through standard screen holes like they aren’t even there.

  • The Difference: This is a much tighter weave (usually 20/20). It creates a fortress that blocks even the smallest insects that standard screens miss.

  • The Reality Check: You will notice a slight reduction in airflow because the holes are so small. But for most of our customers near the coast, being able to sit on the porch at sunset without getting eaten alive is a trade-off they are happy to make.

4. Solar & Shade Screens (The Heat Shield)

Does your patio face West? If your lanai feels like a sauna by 3:00 PM, you don’t just need a screen—you need a heat shield.

  • The Benefit: Solar screens are designed to block up to 70% of the sun’s heat and glare before it even hits your house. This can actually help lower your cooling bills.

  • Privacy Bonus: These screens offer excellent daytime privacy. You can see out perfectly fine, but neighbors in Wesley Chapel or Largo won’t be able to see into your pool area as easily. It’s a great way to make your outdoor space feel more like a private room.

5. Standard Fiberglass (The “Quick Fix”)

This is the basic, builder-grade mesh you see on almost every new home construction.

  • The Reality: It’s cheap and it works—for a while. But the Florida sun eventually “cooks” the fiberglass. It becomes brittle, and after 3 or 4 years, it’ll tear if you even look at it wrong. If you’re on a tight budget or just need a quick window repair, it’s fine. But for a full cage or a high-use lanai, I always recommend one of the upgrades above. It ends up being cheaper in the long run because you aren’t paying for labor to replace it every few years.

Why the Right Installation Matters

Choosing the right mesh is only half the battle. If the spline (the rubber cord that holds the screen in) isn’t the right size, or if the frame is bent, even the best Super Screen won’t stay tight.

At Excellent Sliding Doors & Windows, we’ve seen everything. We’ve dealt with rotted rollers, bent frames, and shredded screens from Riverview to Brandon. We don’t just “patch” holes; we look at the whole system. When we do a rescreen, we make sure the tension is perfect so your cage can handle the next big storm.
